Assigning Keyboard Shortcuts to Individual Domains [Firefox Tip]

There are a few blogs and sites that I need to open plenty of times everyday. Hence, I have assigned keyboard shortcuts to each domain so that I need not type the full URL of each domain again and again. For example, I have assigned “LH” for Lifehacker, “D” for Devilsworkshop, “M” for MobileGyaan, etc and whenever I need to open Devilsworkhop, just putting the letter “D” on address-bar opens up Devilsworkshop. There are various ways of assigning such shortcuts but in this post I am going to mention the simplest way of doing this that doesn’t even need installation of any add-on.

Assigning Shortcuts to each websites:

• Bookmark the domain on your Firefox bookmarks list that you want to assign shortcut to
• Open Firefox bookmarks list by pressing “ctrl+b” inside Firefox, locate the domain you just bookmarked
• Right click on the domain and click properties
• As seen on the image, put your desired keyword and save it!

Voila, you are done! Now anytime you you need to open the site, just enter the keyword you assigned to it on your Firefox address bar and hit enter. This way you can assign shortcuts to as many sites on your bookmarks list, provided you do not use the same keyword for two different websites.

Such changes made to Windows registry cause it to grow in size, no matter whether new information is added or deleted from registry. MS releases Linux driver code

Software giant, Microsoft on Monday announced that the company has released 20,000 lines of device driver code to the Linux community.

Talking about this move as a break from the ordinary, the official website of Microsoft said that The code, which includes three Linux device drivers, has been submitted to the Linux kernel community for inclusion in the Linux tree. The drivers will be available to the Linux community and customers alike, and will enhance the performance of the Linux operating system when virtualized on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V or Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V.

"Today we're releasing Linux device driver code to the Linux kernel community. This is a significant milestone because it's the first time we've released code directly to the Linux community. Additionally significant is that we are releasing the code under the GPLv2 license, which is the Linux community's preferred license," said Tom Hanrahan, director of the OSTC, Microsoft.

Sam Ramji, senior director of platform Strategy at Microsoft said, "We are seeing Microsoft communities and open source communities grow together, which is ultimately of benefit to our customers. The Linux community, for example, has built a platform used by many customers. So our strategy is to enhance interoperability between the Windows platform and many open source technologies, which includes Linux, to provide the choices our customers are asking for."

Citing the economic slowdown as the key driver for this move by the company, Ramji said that many companies are consolidating their hardware and software assets and the trying to do everything with controllable costs.

"Many customers are looking into how virtualization can reduce the cost of deploying and managing their IT infrastructure through server consolidation and more efficient use of server resources." added Hanrahan.

He further said that customers have told them that they would like to standardize on one virtualization platform, and the Linux device drivers would help customers who are running Linux to consolidate their Linux and Windows servers on a single virtualization platform, thereby reducing the complexity of their infrastructure.

Lock and Hide Folders in Windows Without Additional Software

Follow these steps:
1) Open Notepad and copy the contents of the code below.

2) Change the password by replacing type your password here in the code with your password.

3) Save it as XYZ.bat (Note: Try to be innovative and save it in such a way that it sounds like a system file so that nobody will try to bother clicking it)

4) Close the file if it is still opened and double click XYZ.bat

5) It will create a new folder called ‘Locker’ automatically. (If you want the file name to be different, find and replace Locker in the code with the name of your choice). This new locker folder will be created in the same hierarchy as the .bat file.



6) Place the contents inside and double click XYZ.bat, it will ask whether you want to lock. Say ‘Y’ and now

your folder will disappear.



7) To view again, double click XYZ.bat again and enter your password.



FAQ:

1. What if I no longer want to hide the folder?
Just delete the XYZ.bat file when the locker folder is in visible mode. Or you can rename the Locker folder to something else and the next time if you double click, it will create an empty Locker folder.


2. What if I deleted the .bat file when the Locker folder is not hidden?
You can download the code again, change the password and create the XYZ.bat file. Now paste that file in the same hierarchy as the Locker folder. It will work as before with the new password.

3. What if I deleted the .bat file when the Locker folder is hidden?
The contents are still there hidden, so don’t panic! Just download the code again, change the password and create the XYZ.bat file. Now paste that file in the same hierarchy as the Locker folder is hidden. Double click the .bat file and you can unlock the Locker folder with the new password.
Note: This trick is only to provide Privacy, so that nobody accidentally opens your private folders. It does not provide any ultimate security. Anybody can open XYZ.bat in any text editor and view the code. As I had mentioned it before try to keep this file in not an obvious place with a name that looks like a system file, so that nobody will have a chance to touch or doubt at this file.
